A team of seven people, LED by Associate professor Rosa Baier of Brown University, studied the effects of tunable LED lighting on 99 nursing homes at ACC Care Center. ACC Care Center, based in Sacramento, Calif., was part of the Sacramento Municipal Utility and THE DEPARTMENT of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the demonstration installation of lighting.
By installing indoor LED lights that adjust color and light intensity during the day and night, ACC Care Center improves sleep disorders in seniors without the need for prescription sleeping pills.

A total of 63 elderly people, with an average age of 88.3, participated in the study, and 71 percent of them were women, according to the report. Dementia, which affects 35 of 65 people, is often accompanied by delusions, hallucinations, depression, agitation, anxiety, loss of control, irritability and delirium.
The study found that the elderly experienced an average of 3.6 nighttime sleep disturbances under static lighting, compared with 1.8 times under tunable lighting. Bell said the results were not entirely unexpected, given that the team had assumed that such interference could have a positive effect on sleep.

In fact, the nursing home initially changed its tunable lighting to save energy. However, researchers see it as a low-risk intervention to improve sleep quality. Meanwhile, as nursing homes adjust their work hours and resources in response to the Novel Coronavirus epidemic, the long term care industry should prioritize the adoption of such tunable lighting systems.
