In May 2020, Sumitomo Signed an agreement with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which involved the government's initial installation and testing of the smart poles. Sumitomo, in partnership with NEC, will install two types of 5G streetlight smart poles in Tokyo's West Shinjuku district by the end of June.
In its Basic Strategy of TOKYO Data Highway, formulated in August 2019, the TOKYO Metropolitan Government called for the acceleration of 5G network construction in TOKYO. As part of this effort, the Government hopes to install smart poles in the West Shinjuku area as soon as possible. The smart pole integrates 5G AAU(AAU is the main equipment of 5G base station), LED street lights, public WiFi, cameras, speakers, billboards, USB charging and other functions into one, supporting multiple operators to share.

More specifically, the two companies plan to install two models of NEC's Smart Street Lighting, which will support single-site sharing and multi-site sharing, respectively.
Single-station sharing, in which multiple carriers share a 5G AAU, is estimated to be limited.
Multi-station sharing means that multiple operators independently install 5G AAU on a smart Pole, such as Pole Type 2 above, and 5G AAU of different operators are arranged up and down.

However, from the field pictures, the actual installation effect seems to be somewhat different from the design drawing. 5G AAU is not neatly and perfectly embedded into the rod body as shown in the drawing, which is probably the reason why it is still being installed and adjusted.
NEC and Sumitomo said the project aims to verify the usefulness of the poles in normal and emergency situations. According to the news, the project plans to put the 5G shared antenna system into full use and extend it to the entire city by March 2021.
