The Specification V1, as it is called, was launched by the IoT-Ready Alliance, an industry group, and aims to advance the field of lighting for the Internet of Things.
It defines interfaces that allow any type of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor or control module to seamlessly connect to light fixtures or other building systems. The standard is independent of network protocols.
"Interface specifications are a very important first step implemented by the IOT-Ready Alliance to make it easy to install IoT technology in lights now and in the future," said Joe Costello, CEO of Connected Lighting specialist Enlighted.
The standard specifies all elements of the interface, including mechanical, electrical and software elements, and allows components to be modified and replaced in the field without disassembly.
Developed under a royalty-free license, the specification works with any network protocol, including Thread, BLE, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and IP/ Ethernet.
It is backward compatible with traditional lighting controls and can be implemented using traditional lighting controls until the need to use the Internet of Things.
"We have announced the launch of a fifth-generation sensor that will comply with the IOT-ready interface specification. We are also committed to ensuring that all future sensors meet IOT-Ready standards. We look forward to working with our member companies to develop new technologies that accelerate the adoption of LED lighting and enable smarter buildings."
