The pixels on an LCD screen do not generate or emit light per se. Their job is to adjust how much light is transmitted from a backlight. In such applications, most leds use white or a combination of several colors to achieve a wider color gamut.
In addition to LCD TVS, leds are also used in projectors in place of older light bulbs, which act like LED backlights on LCD screens. These leds, which are used in projectors, are used as high-intensity light sources (usually red, green, and blue leds), which are then tuned by tiny LCDS or DMD (digital mirror devices) and projected onto the screen through a lens. Leds and lasers are used together in a hybrid light source to bring higher brightness.
To sum up, when used as a backlight, leds exist only as optical engines, not to create images directly.
