When the characteristic size of the grating is equal to the wavelength, it has polarization-related optical properties. This makes it difficult to design gratings with high diffraction efficiency for arbitrary polarization. Based on the concept in the literature [T. Clausnitzer, et al., Proc. SPIE 5252, 174-182 (2003)], we will show how to rigorously analyze pole-dependent properties of gratings and how to use parameters to optimize the design of pole-independent gratings with high diffraction efficiency.
