Scatterd light is broader and thus softer 

You see this when clouds and /or fog block the path of the sun's rays.The ligth streaming from the sun hits the clouds/fog and diffuses in every direction creating a softer glow-see the way shadows tend to disappear when skies are overcast or foggy.
