Information

The accuracy of LED drive power supply usually refers to the constant current error. In fact, the drive accuracy is not limited to the current accuracy. LED is a typical current driven device. Precise control of LED drive power can determine many parameters including light efficiency, power efficiency, heat dissipation and product brightness.
Because the voltage and supply voltage of a set of leds can change, a dedicated driver must be used to ensure that the LED power current is accurate to control brightness. Linear constant-current LED driver and step-down switch converter are widely used, and they have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Because the voltage and supply voltage of a set of leds can change, a dedicated driver must be used to ensure that the LED power current is accurate to control brightness. Linear constant-current LED driver and step-down switch converter are widely used, and they have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Linear constant-current LED drivers
Linear drive requires very few components and is mostly noiseless. However, the disadvantage is that the heat dissipated and supply voltage is proportional to the difference between the positive VOLTAGE of the LED. To prevent overheating, the package may need to divide an additional cooling zone on the PCB, which increases the cost and quantity of PCB required, as well as the risk that the drive IC will turn off the LED due to thermal shut-off.
Step step-down switch converter
The buck (or buck) converter is efficient and produces little heat, but the on-off solution requires an inductor and a Schottky diode. However, noise will be generated when the supply voltage drops rapidly to the positive LED voltage. If the drive is placed next to the LED, the extra heat causes the LED to operate at a higher temperature, reducing its life. Radio frequency interference (RFI) is an important consideration in automotive applications. It is recommended that EMI/RFI filters be placed in front of the opening converter to prevent noise generated by high frequency conversion from returning to the power supply as it may interfere with devices such as AM/FM band radios. In order to avoid disadvantages and give full play to the advantages of the two schemes, a scheme combining linearity and step-down can be adopted to ensure the accuracy of LED power supply current while reducing the conversion noise to the minimum.
