According to foreign media reports, researchers from Hiroshima University, Japan have shown that novel Coronavirus can be killed by a uv wavelength that can be safely used around humans. The newly published study is the first to show that far-UVC, with a wavelength of 222nm, is particularly effective against SARS-COV-2, not just the similarly structured coronavirus.

It's no secret that certain wavelengths of light can kill microbes, such as those used in some public bathrooms and on airplanes for rapid surface "cleaning." However, the wavelength of light normally used for photosterilization is 254nm, which, while useful for inactivating some viruses, can be dangerous to the eyes and skin.
The risk to humans of this light limits its use in public Spaces during working hours. However, there is growing evidence that the safer 222nm wavelength is also effective against many pathogens, and that the light poses no threat to human vision or skin.

This latest study demonstrates that far-UVC light can effectively inactivate the SARS-COV-2 virus that caused the pandemic, making far-UVC light a promising solution for cleaning public surfaces. Such a lighting system would be particularly useful in hospitals, where it would be difficult to fully empty a room for germicidal lighting.

Researchers say light can kill 99.7 percent of the SARS-COV-2 virus in just 30 seconds. Because this wavelength of light does not penetrate the protective layer of human tissue, it is not harmful to human vision or skin, making it more attractive and safe than the 254-nm sterilizing ULTRAVIOLET light commonly used.
