Researchers at graz University of Technology have created a new TYPE of 3D printer that USES leds instead of laser sources for the rapid prototyping of metal parts. The new 3D printer can optimize the construction time, metal powder consumption, equipment cost and post-treatment of 3D metal printing. The development team has applied for a patent for the 3D printer.、

The TECHNOLOGY used in the 3D printer is said to be similar to selective lasers or electron-beam melting. The process USES molten metal powder, which is then piled up to form a component. The new technology, called Selective LEd-based Melting (SLEDM), eliminates two core issues related to the powder bed manufacturing process.

These two core issues include the time-consuming production of large quantities of metal parts and time-consuming manual rework. SLEDM USES a high-performance LED beam featuring a specially adapted LED from Lighting specialist Preworks and a sophisticated lens system that focuses the DIAMETER of the LED beam.

The lens system allows the beam to vary between 0.05 and 20 millimeters during melting. The variable LED focus allows for greater volume melting per unit of time without the need for internal filaments. The lack of internal filaments has led to a 20-fold reduction in manufacturing time for components and fuel cells or medical technologies.
The process also means that the components are assembled from top to bottom, exposing the components and minimizing the amount of powder required. Necessary post-processing may be performed during the printing process. The printer is currently being used to produce bioabsorbable metal implants, such as screws made from magnesium alloys used to treat broken bones. Those implants dissolve into the body after the fracture has grown, eliminating the need for a second surgery to remove the screws.
