Scientists from Lehigh University, West Chester University in the US, Osaka University in Japan and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands have developed a new technology to regulate the color of leds, according to reports.

Volkmar Dierolf, a famous expert and chairman of lehigh University's School of Physics, participated in the research and development of the project. It is claimed that the new technology could pave the way for monolithic integration to achieve simple color blending of light bulbs. With this technology, it will be possible for commercial leds to adjust between bright white and more comfortable warm tones.

The team described the possibility of color tuning gallium nitride based leds by simply changing the chronology of the working current supplied to the device. Notably, the technology is compatible with leds, the core of commercial solid-state LED lighting.

Dierolf said that a single LED could be tuned to produce red, green and blue light from a single gallium nitride LED structure doped with a single type of rare earth ion europium (Eu). In other words, the team manipulated the emission characteristics of atomic dopants to achieve color tunability in a single GALLIum nitride based LED species.

Mitchell points out that the study (which targets multiple excited states of the same dopant at the same time) is not limited to gallium nitride: europium systems, which are more commonly used. The results of this study open a new field for single dopant tunable emission in semiconductor which can be realized by simple injection current tuning.

Dierolf believes that those who want to get more comfortable warm white light from leds will benefit from the technology. And, given the higher pixel density the technology can apply, it could also help develop Micro LED displays.
