Information

The wireless optical communication LiFi is a method of transmitting data rates over short distances. However, the sun and other light sources can interfere with this transmission. One possible way to prevent this would be to use deep ULTRAVIOLET leds for transmission, because they work at a "solar blind" wavelength, meaning that the sun's light travels to the earth's surface and the deep ultraviolet light is already scattered. Using deep ultraviolet leds for data transmission is undisturbed by the sun or other light sources.

Kazunobu Kojima, associate professor at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Advanced Materials at Northeastern University, said that both visible and infrared wireless communications can be significantly disrupted by sunlight. To avoid confusing visible and infrared light with sunlight, the researchers aim to improve light communication by using deep ultraviolet light, which is unobtrusive and can be detected.
