Street lamps were once used as water coolers for mosquito nets. But with leds replacing the traditional light bulbs that attract mosquitoes, insects don't seem to hang around streetlamps for as long as they used to in the dark, meaning some local bat populations are losing their lightings for dinner. And in fact, the scientists found that photosensitive bats benefit, and opportunistic bats lose their midnight snack.

Christian Voight and Daniel Lewanzik, members of the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, recently conducted a mosquito/bat /LED study. The insects are attracted by the wide wavelength spectrum, especially in the ultraviolet range of the high-pressure mercury bulb. Because the new leds are uV-free, they are not their old rendezvous.

The study involved installing bat recorders on 46 street lamps in several German cities to detect bats through echolocation. After the LEDS were installed, some of the bats lost nearly half their weight, but light-sensitive bats, which are usually attracted to artificial light, showed up 4.5 times more often.

Bats are not the only ones affected. Short wavelengths of "blue" light affect the animals' behavior, according to research published in the Journal Ecological Applications by the American Ecological Society (ESA). In this case, the study concluded that leds attracted nearly 50 percent more nocturnal invertebrates than other light sources. As a result, invasive alien species may be attracted to urban areas! Ports and commercial vessels.

Another study concluded that artificial light, particularly leds, alters bird behaviour, potentially negatively affecting biorhythms, daily activities and reproduction. The behaviors of some of the birds in the study included sleeping less, waking earlier and leaving the nest more often. In fact, light has such a powerful biological influence that it causes foraging, sleeping, migration, immune response, changes in cortisol, testosterone and melatonin levels, and metabolism of glucose at night.
